An energetic still life, this was one of the works included in the Bladon Gallery exhibition at Hurstbourne Tarrant in 1956. When it was shown again in 1961 at the I am Lazarus show (for the launch of Berlin’s book of the same name), Josef Paul Hodin, the Czech art critic, called Berlin ‘the last Romantic’ and described his still life and landscape paintings as ‘where the melodiousness of colour comes into its own…’. Berlin said at the time he had turned to ‘Old Testament’ colours after leaving St. Ives…
